Purple Heart Homes (PHH), enabling national expansion of services to U.S. veterans.
EPSCF chose to nurture a partnership with PHH, an organization that provides housing solutions for service-disabled and aging veterans. PHH does what is needed on behalf of the Veterans they serve from building ramps to retrofitting bathrooms and kitchens to providing rental and homeownership opportunities. This fast-growing organization needs organizational support so they can assist more veterans, more efficiently.
EPSCF finds enormous satisfaction and benefit in helping their partners become more effective in meeting their mission and eagerly sponsored capacity enhancements that allow PHH to help veterans at lower cost. For three years starting in 2019, EPSCF supported new staff positions so PHH could hire the correct people and implement an effective organizational structure to fulfill their mission. As is common practice with our grant-making, we support PHH on a declining scale with the expectation that PHH finds donors to sustain these positions for a long-term.
In order to further support their capacity building efforts, EPSCF highly encouraged PHH to seek and move towards state funding. In May 2023, PHH was notified that the State of North Carolina included them in their next two budgets at a level of 3M/year, a fabulous milestone achievement.
“Funding from the Elsa & Peter Soderberg Charitable Foundation over the last three years allowed PHH to complete more projects, 481, for Veterans than all previous years combined. With some of the organizational cost pressures alleviated because of this funding, PHH had the leeway to think strategically and develop programs to sustain PHH into the future.”
PHH realized a multitude of additional results beyond the 481 projects completed from 2019-2021. Highlights include:
$1,000,000 appropriated to PHH from the State of North Carolina
6 Tiny Homes built and delivered
4 homes rehabilitated and placed into the PHH Rental Program
5 Veterans placed into homes through the Home Ownership Program
+ Completion of a Training and Conference Center
+ New and increased grant funding from corporate donors
